I recently had the chance to photograph Kenzie’s senior session at South Valley Park in Ken Caryl, just outside of Denver — and it turned out to be one of my favorite shoots of the season. We originally planned for an afternoon session, but when a classic Colorado thunderstorm rolled in, we decided to reschedule for the next morning. It ended up being the best decision. The early light was soft, golden, and perfectly balanced — exactly what you hope for during Denver senior photos.
As a Denver photographer, I’m always searching for great locations that show off Colorado’s beauty while still being easy to get to. South Valley Park checks all the boxes. The park is full of character, with red rock formations, tall grasses, and views of the foothills that surround you from both sides. There’s even a small water area that reflects the morning light beautifully. It feels peaceful and secluded, yet it’s still close to home for students from Chatfield High School, Columbine High School, Dakota Ridge, Heritage, Arapahoe, Littleton, Cherry Creek, Grandview, Mullen, and Regis Jesuit High School — some of the largest and most well-known schools in the Denver metro and Littleton areas.
One of my favorite things about doing senior photos in the morning is the light. Colorado’s weather can be unpredictable, especially in late summer and early fall when afternoon thunderstorms are common. Shooting early helps us avoid the clouds and wind, and the lighting is much softer than mid-day sun. The mornings also tend to be quieter, which means we can move around more freely and take advantage of all the different backgrounds South Valley Park has to offer without the crowds.
Kenzie did such an amazing job preparing for her session — from her wardrobe to her confidence in front of the camera. She brought a few outfit options that worked perfectly with the natural tones of the park. I always recommend that seniors bring a variety of looks — casual, classic, and something that feels uniquely them. It helps tell their story in a genuine and timeless way.
If you’re starting to plan your Denver senior photos, I highly recommend considering a morning session at South Valley Park. Between the variety of scenery, the flattering light, and the peaceful atmosphere, it’s one of the best spots near Denver for senior portraits.
