Denver Photography Frequently Asked Questions
I’ve been a full-time photographer since 2016 and have photographed everything from high school seniors and families to entrepreneurs, dating profiles, Fortune 500 events, and national brand activations. Over the years, I’ve heard just about every question you can ask before a photoshoot.
Below are answers to the questions I get most often about booking, locations, outfits, weather, editing, photo delivery, and what it’s actually like to work with me.
Booking & Pricing
What types of photography do you specialize in?
I specialize in photographing people. Most of my work falls into high school senior photos, family photography, personal branding and lifestyle photography, headshots, dating profile photos, corporate events, and brand activations.
My style is relaxed, natural, and polished without feeling overly posed. Whether I’m photographing one person in the mountains or a major brand activation with hundreds of people, I’m always looking for real expressions, good light, and images that actually feel like the person or experience I’m photographing.
Where are you based?
I’m based in Lakewood, Colorado and photograph clients throughout Denver, Boulder, Littleton, Golden, Cherry Creek, Cherry Hills, the foothills, and the surrounding Front Range.
A lot of my work is in Denver, but I’m definitely not limited to Denver.
Do you travel for photoshoots?
Absolutely. I regularly photograph sessions in Boulder, Evergreen, Breckenridge, Summit County, and other areas around Colorado, and my event and brand-activation work takes me all over the country.
For portrait sessions, locations within about 45 minutes of Denver are included with most Standard and Full Sessions. Locations farther away may have an additional travel fee.
Who will actually photograph my session?
Me.
When you hire Tim Gillies Photography, you’re hiring me, Tim Gillies. I handle the planning, photography, editing style, and overall experience.
For large corporate events or productions where we need more coverage, I can also bring in additional photographers.
How far in advance should I book?
For most portrait sessions, I recommend booking at least a few weeks ahead. During spring, summer, and especially fall, booking one to two months in advance is a good idea if you want a specific evening or weekend date.
If you need something sooner, check my online calendar anyway. Reschedules happen and sometimes dates open up.
How much does a photoshoot cost?
Portrait sessions currently start at $695.
I offer a 30-minute Express Session, a 1-hour Standard Session, and a 2-hour Full Session. The longer sessions give us more time for outfits, locations, and variety.
Planning Your Photoshoot
How do we choose a location?
I’ll help. I have a detailed guide to my favorite Denver-area photoshoot locations with real examples, parking information, walking requirements, best seasons, and my personal take on each location.
We can choose something urban, natural, mountainous, studio-based, or completely different depending on what you want your photos to feel like.
What time of day is best for photos?
For outdoor photos, the best light is usually shortly after sunrise or during the last 90 minutes or so before sunset.
Mountain sessions usually work best in the evening. Urban locations give us more flexibility and can look great in the morning or evening.
I’m awkward in front of a camera. Will you tell me what to do?
Absolutely. Most of the people I photograph are not professional models, and I don’t expect you to walk into the shoot already knowing what to do.
I’ll direct you, give you things to do, adjust positioning when necessary, and keep things moving. My goal is for the shoot to feel more like we're hanging out and creating photos along the way than standing there wondering what to do with your hands.
What happens if the weather is bad?
I keep a close eye on the forecast, but Colorado weather changes quickly, so I usually avoid making the final decision too early. We sometimes need to make the call a few hours before the shoot. And if that's the case, I'll be in touch with you that day to make a plan.
If we’re dealing with rain, thunderstorms, heavy snow, dangerous conditions, or weather that is clearly going to hurt the session, we’ll reschedule.
Photos, Editing & Delivery
How many photos will I receive?
Express Sessions include 30+ edited images, Standard Sessions include 60+, and Full Sessions include 100+.
I don’t intentionally hold back good photos just to hit a specific number. My goal is to give you a strong, complete gallery without delivering a bunch of duplicates or throwaway images.
How long does it take to get my photos?
Normal portrait turnaround is usually about 7 to 10 days. During my busiest summer and fall periods, it can occasionally be closer to 10 to 14 days.
Can I get the RAW or unedited photos?
Usually, no. The editing process is part of the finished work you’re hiring me to create. RAW files are unfinished files, so I normally only deliver the completed edited images.
High School Senior Photography
When should I book senior photos in Denver?
Summer and fall are my busiest seasons for Denver senior photos, so I recommend booking one to two months ahead if possible.
Can I do both urban and mountain senior photos?
Definitely, but the amount we can do depends on the session length and travel time. Denver gives us everything from RiNo murals and downtown architecture to red rocks, foothills, lakes, and mountain scenery.
Can we incorporate sports, music, cars, hobbies, or other interests?
Please do. Some of my favorite senior sessions are the ones that actually show who the senior is. I’ve photographed seniors playing tennis, golfing, fly fishing, playing guitar, with cars, in sports uniforms, and doing plenty of other things that are meaningful to them.
Family Photography
What if my kids don't cooperate during family photos?
That's normal. Kids are kids, and expecting a three-year-old to stand perfectly still and smile at a camera for an hour is not realistic.
I keep things moving, let kids warm up, and try to create real interaction instead of forcing every image.
What should we wear for family photos?
Coordinate, but don't match. Pick a general color palette and let everyone wear something that fits within it.
Neutral and earthy colors, layers, denim, texture, and simple patterns tend to photograph really well outdoors in Colorado.
Personal Branding & Headshots
What's the difference between a headshot and a personal branding photoshoot?
A headshot is usually focused on a tighter professional portrait. A personal branding session gives you a much larger library.
We can create headshots, lifestyle portraits, working images, environmental photos, social content, website images, and different outfits and settings.
Where can I use my personal branding photos?
Your website, LinkedIn, social media, email marketing, press features, speaking engagements, advertisements, real estate marketing, newsletters, and anywhere else your personal brand shows up.
Dating Profile Photography
Won't professional dating photos look fake or overly staged?
Not if they're done right. The goal isn't to make your dating profile look like a corporate headshot page.
I want the images to feel like great photos somebody could have captured while you were actually living your life.
Can you guarantee that I'll get more matches?
No photographer can honestly guarantee what another person will do on a dating app.
What I can do is create a much stronger set of photographs that show you clearly, confidently, naturally, and with more personality than a collection of old selfies and cropped group photos.
Events & Brand Activations
What types of events do you photograph?
I photograph corporate conferences, sales kickoffs, award ceremonies, fundraising galas, retreats, trade shows, networking events, holiday parties, product launches, sponsorship activations, influencer events, hospitality experiences, and plenty of other corporate events.
What's the difference between event photography and brand activation photography?
Traditional event photography is largely about documenting what happened.
Brand activation photography goes a step further. I'm also thinking about how the brand shows up, how people interact with it, sponsor visibility, talent and influencer content, environmental details, and what images the marketing or agency team will need afterward.
Can we get photos the next day for social media or press?
Yes. I can provide a small selection of highlight images within 24 hours upon request, which is especially useful for social media, press, internal communications, or multi-day events.
STILL HAVE QUESTIONS?
